Why do I keep getting the same injuries and pain when running?

Does the same injury appear for you every time you run or even afterwards? Taking time to rest until the pain goes away, and finding the injury comes back as soon as you get back into your rhythm? Or do you have pain while running? Not quite sure what it is but gets in the way of you performing your best?

Constant pain can not only restrict your physical abilities, but also your mental health. This can be particularly frustrating when you are training for a marathon or find motivation in setting goals and pushing your limits. It can also creep into normal everyday life, finding it difficult to walk any long distances or playing with your children.

How can I make my running injury better?

Resting and using ice packs can have a great impact on reducing muscle pain, however these usually provide short term relief without getting to the root cause. If your running pain reoccurs every time you run it is a good idea to find the underlying issues with the use of sports therapy. The source of your injury could include an unidentified weakness, issues with posture, or even your feet! Best Form Sports Therapy works with you to identify the source of your muscle pain and help to relieve and rehabilitate injuries.

Why should I consider treatment?

Even just a little pain can eventually cause big problems. Untreated pain in your knee, feet, hips or back could result in injuries that could need surgery. Seeking injury diagnosis, treatment or even regular massages can make the world of difference in avoiding recurrence or worsening with further use.

Every running style, environment and body is different - and unfortunately with many public healthcare sectors having to see more patients than they have the time or resources for, your issues could be overlooked or treatments postponed. This can cause significant stress and could lead you to give up running altogether! Best Form Sports Therapy we take a hands-on approach to treat your pain, using expert knowledge to find a cause, and offering a range of treatment styles to support your needs. We also offer exercises that you can complete outside of sessions to strengthen particular muscles or stretch various areas to avoid re-injury.

What can I do to avoid injury?

  1. Vary your training - Avoid overworking the same muscles again and again, switching up your running routes can keep you motivated, and also work different muscles in different ways to strengthen your body as a whole. Risk of running injury is greatly increased if you run the same routes and overwork yourself.

  2. Pick your shoes carefully - As we mentioned earlier, every body is different. It is key to find shoes that are comfortable for you and give you the support that you need. It’s also important to consider where you are running. A track is very different to woodland, so research a running shoe that suits your most used environment. Using uncomfortable shoes can increase muscle pain and risk of running injury.

  3. Warm up exercises vs stretching - stretching just before running can potentially increase risk of injury due to separating muscle fibres further than normal. Warm up exercises however prepare your muscles for action in a more normal range of movement. We recommend easing yourself into stretches after running or on rest days.

  4. Regular treatments - sports massage isn’t just for injuries! Regular treatment keeps your body performing at its best and allows us to spot and treat problem areas we can find that could eventually cause issues for you while running or performing other physical activities.
